This book while intimidatingly long is so worth the read. The characters and plot is so well thought-out that you can tell the completeness of the story Follett had in his head before even siting down to write. There is not single point i can think of where this book lagged, an amazing feat for nearly 1000 pages. It is a timeless story full of beauty in all sense of the word.

Wow I love this book. I was initially daunted by the length of it but soon enough I didn't want it to end. I was bought it as a present a few years ago but at that time I hadn't appreciated that it was such a popular book anyway. The pace of the book was just right. I enjoy books that span years or even decades as I like to know how the characters progress. The 12th century medieval setting is a favourite of mine too in particular the era of cathedral building and town development. It was interesting how when some characters were introduced I didn't immediately warm to them but as the story progressed I got very engrossed and into each and every character. My only very minor gripe, and it is minor, was that there were a couple of references to horse chestnut trees and these weren't introduced to England until the late 16th/early 17th century.Very glad to see there is a follow up in [b:World Without End|5064|World Without End (The Pillars of the Earth, #2)|Ken Follett|http://d.gr-assets.com/books/1347235999s/5064.jpg|2845518] and a TV series.
