It’s The Miller’s Daughter meets Rumplestiltskin and every bit as reminiscent of the old time fairytales. This is a sloooooow read. I considered DNF’ing a few times, and although I am glad I stuck with it, I do feel like the entire story could have been told exactly the same with half the amount of pages. The second half really picks up and it is worth getting to! Whatever the plot may lack in fast/paced action, it makes up for with its atmospheric, magical setting and dynamic character building. There’s a lot of changing POVs (some that didn’t seem necessary) and nothing at all that differentiates between them so that could be hard to follow, at times. We have three strong female characters in Miryem, Wanda, and Irina. THIS is how you write female empowerment. All three prove their own worth- outside of marriage and producing heirs and the men who would doubt them- to save their kingdoms. I loved seeing how their relationships and dynamics grew and shifted to the end (Irina is QUEEN! Loved her wit and matter-of-factness.). Overall, this was a fun fairytale that I would recommend for anyone who enjoys the genre! 3.5 stars!
