Sharon, lonely, traipsing around Europe with an eccentric grandmother, or semi-settled in Hollywood with a film-director father who had not much time to spare for her - Sharon had long lived in her imagination with the Rectory Children (from a book of that name) who had become as real to her as though they had been real indeed.

So when she found that her lot was suddenly to be cast among a live sextet of children, she looked forward to it longingly.
