Beskrivning
Through the lens of this enigmatic protagonist, the author delves into themes of survival, introspection, and the profound connection between humanity and its environment. The tale challenges preconceived notions of what it means to be human in a world that has been irrevocably altered. As the protagonist encounters the echoes of the past and the resilience of life, readers are invited to question their understanding of existence and the very essence of humanity.
With rich prose and thought-provoking ideas, the story weaves a narrative that is not only a reflection on the ramifications of environmental neglect but also a call to reconsider the paths we tread. Ultimately, it offers a glimpse into a future that, while dark, holds the potential for regeneration and renewal.

I disliked the writing perspective at first... felt weird with the 2nd hand narrator talking to a main character with a silent perspective...but... it drilled a whole in my brain and sucked me in. This was so good and I want a whole series of this. So much world huolding in such a short span. Felt like a super clean prologue to a much larger story.
Another reviewer who gave this four stars said that it's quite good, as long as you can ignore the politics in the story. Not sure how you'd manage that, since the politics ARE the story. Regardless, this is a clever, witty, and thoughtful story, trying to tackle a complex subject and (in my opinion) doing a pretty good job of it. It's my first of NK Jemisin's work, and I'll be looking out for more. Jason Isaacs reads the audio version and my takeaway is that he should narrate more things.
