Faebound was my local book club’s pick for September, and while it had some intriguing ideas, like obeahs and drum magic, it didn’t quite hit the mark for me. The slow pacing made it hard to stay invested, and the characters felt underdeveloped. The romance also lacked chemistry, feeling more forced than natural.The drum magic and obeahs were the most interesting aspects, but the world-building surrounding them felt unclear and underexplored. Overall, while there were some creative elements, the story didn’t fully come together.
Ich habe das Buch gewonnen und durfte es lesen - vielen Dank!Das Buch überzeugt mich optisch auf ganzer Linie: Das wunderschöne Cover – auch ohne Schutzumschlag – und der farbige Buchschnitt machen es zu einem echten Blickfang im Regal. Besonders gelungen fand ich auch die beigelegte Illustration, die mir sehr dabei geholfen hat, mir die Charaktere besser vorzustellen.Der Schreibstil ist angenehm und der Lesefluss leicht, sodass man schnell in die Geschichte hineinkommt. Die verwendete Zeitform passt gut zur Erzählweise. Auch die Weltenkarte im Buch ist ein Pluspunkt – sie ist nicht nur schön gestaltet, sondern hilft auch dabei, sich gut in der Welt zurechtzufinden.Ein besonderes Highlight war für mich der sogenannte „Magieblick“. Dieses Konzept fand ich spannend und kreativ, und ich hatte viel Freude daran, mir vorzustellen, wie das funktionieren könnte. Auch wie queere Charaktere ganz normal existieren und es so natürlich erschien, hat mir sehr gut gefallen.Etwas enttäuschend empfand ich hingegen die Romanzen im Buch. Die Gefühle zwischen den Figuren entwickelten sich für meinen Geschmack zu schnell und wirkten dadurch wenig authentisch – kaum in Mosima angekommen, sprühten bereits die Funken. Ähnliches gilt auch für die Beziehung zwischen Rayan und Lettle. Hier hätte ich mir etwas mehr Tiefe und Entwicklung gewünscht.Teilweise war die Handlung vorhersehbar, was der Spannung stellenweise ein wenig genommen hat. Insgesamt war es dennoch ein gutes Buch, das sich flüssig und angenehm lesen lässt. Allerdings hat mir persönlich das gewisse Etwas gefehlt, das mich wirklich mitreißt – daher bin ich noch unentschlossen, ob ich den zweiten Band lesen werde.
A good read, not your typical cookie cutter romantasy with I appreciated as there's only so many times you can read the same story. I would happily recommend it to people but I'm also not rushing out to get the next in the series. I just didn't find myself connecting with the characters in a way that made me care about their future. I had a similar issues that I have with most female MCs, Yeeran was so caught up in her "love" for Salawa and Lettle just came across as a spoiled girl every time something didn't go her way (even though I know she wasn't spoiled and she is completely justified in her feelings, etc, just the way she was written just didn't feel right). Oh and not to mention the number of times a character is told something quite important followed by internal speech of something along the times of "that feels like important information I need to remember" and then NEVER remembering it. All in all it's not a complicated read so definitely worth giving it a go if you like the genre.

Saara El-Arifi paints such a vivid and enchanting world - I did not want to leave!!
