This was my first time reading MM. It was a little odd for me, but I ended upbeing like, ok, this is interesting. There was one thing I thought was kind of strange about the story, which was that they went from interested to an item in a flash. I would have liked a little more build up. Still enjoyed it, though.
3.5⭐I'm no prude, but this had way too much spice (very well written, but still), very little relationship development and even less plot.
Me encanto, fue la historia más linda que leí, el desarrollo de la historia es increíble y el final fue hermoso.
Loved getting more of Scott and Kips story (compared to what was included within the show Heated Rivalry). Not much “action” within the story, but Scott’s POV and character arc was sweet to read.

Cute little read. It's my first book to start my reading journey and habit again. Just to enjoy and bring me back to who I was. This was a light read. Kip and Scott are instant love. They were sweet and very communicative with each other. A very true healthy relationship. Their biggest issue is of course Scott is closeted, and Kip already felt worthless because of the social and class imbalance on top of that being a secret boyfriend. It's tough but they quickly worked it out, and when they did, Scott quickly found his courage to come out to everyone. This is all within a year btw.
I had Game Changer and the rest of the books on my TBR list a little bit now because I’m a sucker for sports romance for a relaxing/comfort read and they’re almost a guilty pleasure. Add in that these books feature queer hockey players and I knew it was one I would enjoy. Then as with many who have large TBRs to get through, I forgot about them until the hype coming from the US about Heated Rivalry and I knew I recognised the name - it’s the second book in the series. Call it kismet etc, but its success made me determined to settle in and read Rachel Reid’s Game Changers series. Game Changer follows the journey of Scott Hunter, the star center and captain of a New York NHL team, and Christopher ‘Kip’ Grady, who is currently employed serving smoothies to repay his student loans while aspiring to secure a position at one of the city's museums. I thought this would be a story where opposites come together; a wealthy millionaire paired with a regular person in their twenties, just beginning their journey. However, it’s an insta-love with a few complications along the way and whilst that’s not my favourite trope; it somehow makes perfect sense for these two. I don’t think this is a spoiler, because there’s so much hype about this series but with Scott living in the closet as for a lot of this book art mirrors real life as so far, there’s never been an openly queer NHL player and having someone accept him for who he is and not want anything from him would be instantly attractive to him. (I still don’t think it’s insta love, but that’s my humble opinion; I think it’s more love that grows quickly due to circumstance.) I loved Kip, he’s someone who is comfortable in his own skin, and has hopes, dreams and beliefs that are relatable whether it be due to his friendships, relationships or hopes for what he wanted out of his life as a career. It gave him depth and reminded me of friends from my younger days at gay bars and clubs. He deserves everything he dreams of, which is why I ended up feeling frustrated for a fictional character. His personality shines so brightly, and he’s so open about who he is, but you can see his spirit being weighed down by his reluctance to challenge Scott. I think for a lot of the book, Kip really does deserve better than what he’s getting from Scott Hunter and whilst I could understand why Scott is the way he is - see my comment about art mimicking real life; Scott doesn’t seem to see what he’s doing to someone he has fallen for. I like that despite the financial imbalance in the relationship; it’s often Kip who seems stronger and more stable in his life when it comes to anything other than finance - he has a loving family and supportive friends who encourage him plus he has hopes and dreams for his future. Scott is an unexpected addition in his life, and I can easily imagine that Kip could be content by himself. Rather than filling an emptiness, their relationship simply adds something extra to his life. Game Changer is a great introduction to the series, it introduces us to the idea overall of ‘What if’ because what if there were queer NHL players both past and present who were looking for love? I do like Scott and Kip’s relationship, and Rachel Reid does showcase the paranoia of how hard it is as a queer person having to live in the closet; something many of us in the community can relate to in one way or another. You are introduced to many characters who will appear in future books of the series, creating a growing sense of familiarity with them as the story progresses. I just wish I could have stepped into the book a few times and shake Scott, so he sees how his inaction hurts Kip.
