THE JEWISH A day was April 19 1943 and General Jürgen Stroop’s troops intended to annihilate the Warsaw Ghetto. This day would go down in history. This man who was about to annihilate the Jewish Ghetto of Warsaw in one of the most infamous actions of the second world war was not aware that for this act of barbarity he was to be sentenced to death in the future and hung in the very spot in which he now held authority. One of the survivors of the ensuing battle was Rachel and the product of her union with Mordecai Anielewitz who was the principal leader of the partisans opposing Stroop was David, the eponymous physicist of the a vicious house-to-house battle Rachel finds herself an inmate of Auschwitz. By pure luck she is befriended by Lucie Adelberger who was herself a medical doctor assigned to Mengele. Once Lucy becomes aware of Rachel’s plight she creates a fictional medical history which indicates a high chance of her having twins. Normally pregnancy is a death sentence at Auschwitz. Rachel now comes under the protection of Mengele. This saves her life. She meets Ian who fought with her at Warsaw and was a friend of the father of her child. They fall in love in the most unlikely of places and Rachel agrees to be Ian’s wife. DEATH fortunes of war are not boding well for the Germans and Mengele dismisses Rachel to a death march to Bergen Belsen near Hanover. Ian is well prepared for the march however from two thousand marchers only four hundred arrive, Ian and Rachel were two of them. Cold hunger and brutality are the orders of the day and the Ukrainian guards who accompany the march disappoint none in this respect.BERGEN and utterly spent Rachel finds herself in the same barracks as the Frank sisters She watches helplessly as Anne Frank dies of typhus, by sheer dint of personal character she survives with her child until the relief by the British troops who are utterly appalled by the sights that Belsen presents to them. Now aware that he is still alive Ian’s father pull strings to have them flown to England.Rachel establishes herself in UK and completes her studies as a Doctor. David meanwhile is brought up and continually reminded of his biological father and background. The rigors of the war have had a deep impact on Ian and he commits suicide leaving a harrowing letter to Rachel and David. David studies hard and is accepted for University. By this time the privations of her past experiences have proved too much for Rachel and she also passes away perhaps the loss of Ian was too much. Absolutely devastated by his mother’s death David swears an oath of revenge at her grave for all to gains a double first and a PhD in nuclear physics. Aldermaston the British Nuclear facility accepts him. He impresses bosses there and is seconded to Sellafield where he is given increased responsibility and security access. Unbeknown to the authorities David has devised an incredibly simple method of spiriting away weapons grade plutonium. The loss of the material is not at first noticed because David manipulates the accounts. Eventually however it becomes inescapably clear that plutonium is going missing and suspicion falls on everyone. Detective Mike Gill is called in to investigateTHE BOMBDavid resigns his post by this time he has gathered sufficient material to create a nuclear device.
