Everyone who harbors an intense interest in someone else's life is a spy; espionage, after all, has curiosity at its root. Reading Spies is like watching a random slide show of someone else's family. As each new frame comes up, you learn more about the subjects, the time in which they lived, the contours of their relationships. But in Spies, the slides are maddeningly out of place.
