描述

In a world where magic once flourished in England, two men embark on a journey that intertwines their fates in remarkable ways. Mr. Norrell, a reclusive and determined scholar, seeks to revive the ancient art of English magic. Meanwhile, Jonathan Strange, an ambitious young man eager to learn and explore, challenges the boundaries of this long extinguished craft. Their partnership is both an alliance and a rivalry, as differing philosophies and personal ambitions create rifts between them.

As they attempt to harness the powers of magic in a war-torn England, they uncover truths about the past and themselves. Norrell's strict adherence to order clashes with Strange's adventurous spirit, leading to breathtaking and often dangerous exploits. The land itself seems to respond to their actions, filled with rich history and the presence of haunting otherworldly beings.

With its intricate world-building and a cast of vivid characters, the narrative weaves through themes of ambition, pride, and the true cost of power. Every magic spell cast and every decision made carries weight, revealing the chilling potentials and dark consequences of their craft.

As the story unfolds, the lines between friend and foe blur, inviting readers into a landscape where imagination reigns, and the very fabric of reality bends before the ambitions of two extraordinary magicians. The intricate tapestry of this tale promises a cerebral journey through both the enchantments and perils that come with the pursuit of magic.

This is a very long book but worth (almost) every page and gains 5 stars from me.I love the way it is written, the characters are developed in great depth and I particular like the Dickens-esque comical descriptions of them and their thoughts throughout the story. The ideas of the author, particular the 'world' which she has created, are fantastic. It always amazes me how someone can come up with these ideas as I just don't have that imagination. There were some chapters during the middle which I thought were a little slow and probably longer than necessary but it soon picked up so that this didn't matter in the slightest.Fantastic. Big shame that it is the authors only novel although I will straight away obtain her short stories set in the same world [b:The Ladies of Grace Adieu and Other Stories|15161|The Ladies of Grace Adieu and Other Stories|Susanna Clarke|http://d.gr-assets.com/books/1312041234s/15161.jpg|3088909]
