Of the three parts of The Divine Comedy, Purgatory (as Dorothy L. Sayers remarks in her comprehensive introduction) is "the least known, the least quoted, and the most loved". In her fine translation Dante (1265-1321) can clearly be seen as the universal poet - sublime, grim, intellectual, simple, humorous, tender, and ecstatic. In contrast to Inferno, this canticle deals with the roots instead of the fruits of sin, as Dante struggles up the terraces of Mount Purgatory on his arduous journey towards God.
