Charlie Holloway is almost fifteen and completely his friends, his family, the place he lives ... Everything is fine. Then, one ordinary day, his world is blown apart.

Without warning or explanation, Charlie's parents send him to Grayrigg School, where he learns of the secret he shares with only a fraction of the human an array of psychic powers known collectively as the Sight. In the future, all life on Planet Earth faces destruction at the hands of a monstrous alien horror known as the Storm. Only the Sighted have a hope of stopping it.

At Grayrigg, Charlie discovers something extraordinary in the most ordinary things, balancing academic life with learning to use and control his newly-awakened telepathic abilities. He befriends two of his new classmates, Izzy Stephenson and Alex Waterfield, but is more intrigued by a Jen Moore.

Depressed and disenchanted with the school, Jen has joined a mysterious group outside Grayrigg called the Storm Chasers. Their leader, the charismatic Hurricane, insists the Chasers are the only hope for humanity come the Dark War, but Charlie suspects a more sinister purpose ... and soon, Grayrigg is under attack from an old evil with a new face.

Only Charlie and his friends can rescue the school from disaster – but will the lessons of the past be enough to save the present day?
