Once long ago, a German legend tells, three kings set out on a journey to a town called Bethlehem. It was a long road they went, from early winter through spring thaw and summer heat and fall frost. And the names of the places where the kings stopped were the names of the months--a whole year--faring to reach their journey's end. That is the story told in these twelve poems.
