I’ve always been “too much.”
Too sensitive. Too picky. Too clumsy. Too dramatic.
As a result, I’ve mastered the art of masking.
But that doesn’t stop Alaric Steele from truly seeing me when he finds me flat on my back in his driveway, mid-meltdown.
As Team Principal of Granata Racing, Alaric is control personified. He’s almost twenty years older than me and happens to be my ex-boyfriend’s dad.
Out of desperation, I accept a new job with Granata.
Which means Alaric is also my new boss.
The most surprising part of my role working in Formula 1 isn’t the intense travel schedule or the fear of seeing my ex around the paddock: it’s navigating the surprise encounters and secret rendezvous that launch Alaric and I into a high-speed forbidden romance neither one of us ever saw coming.
But with Alaric’s career on the line, and my fear of being too much growing louder by the day, is the risk of crashing and burning worth falling for my ex-boyfriend’s dad?
Upgraded is book one in Away We Go, a brand new series of interconnected standalone Formula 1 romances from USA Today bestselling author Abby Millsaps.

She’s trying to put herself back together after a terrible relationship, and you can see how much damage Luca did to her confidence. There were so many moments where she automatically assumed she was the problem, and that was heartbreaking. One of my favourite things about this book was how much care was put into Evangeline’s character. Her autism, ADHD, ARFID, and sensory needs were a huge part of who she was, but they never felt like her entire personality. Instead, they helped shape how she experienced the world, and I loved seeing a character who was allowed to exist exactly as she was. Then there’s Alaric. This man had me smiling constantly. Making sure she ate.Remembering her safe foods. Quietly making accommodations for her. Cleaning up her supplies without making her feel bad. Showing up when she needed someone. He paid attention. 👏The romance itself was really sweet. Their connection felt natural, and I loved how safe she felt with him. After spending so much time being dismissed and invalidated by Luca, seeing someone genuinely listen to her and care about her needs was heartwarming. Favourite Quotes I stifle a laugh. This woman is absolutely awful at masking her emotions. Or maybe—though this is probably wishful thinking—she just doesn’t try to hide them from me. Evangeline presses her lips to mine, and the world around us falls away. There’s lightness, and there’s space; there’s ease and limitless possibility. I don’t care that this is wrong. I don’t care that this could ruin me. I don’t care, I don’t care, I don’t care. “Every part of you is precious to me.” He captures my lips in a heated, drawn-out kiss. My hopefulness grows, though it’s tethered by uncertainty. “Even the messy parts?” “Especially the messy parts.” Final Verdict Upgraded was a really enjoyable read. I loved the neurodivergent representation, I adored Evangeline, and Alaric was the definition of a man who pays attention. If you enjoy Formula 1 romance, protective heroes, emotional healing, and relationships built on kindness and understanding, I’d 100% recommend it.
