查看全部This book was unfortunately disappointing. I loved the crimson moth duology so I hoped to like this book as well. I didn't feel any connection between the two main characters. I wasn't even rooting for them to get together. The curse and the wood king fell flat to me.
Rating: 3.5 ⭐I am feeling quite conflicted about this rating because while the plot itself is solid, the execution did not quite hit the mark for me. The book felt a bit rushed and I think it would have benefited from being longer - I really wanted to go deeper into the lore of the magical world, the character struggles, and the overall emotional stakes. At times the travel felt too easy, where the FMC would move from place to place in the blink of an eye when it should have felt like a long, arduous journey. Even the stakes with the mad Wood King felt a bit low. Despite his reputation, he gave her plenty of time to complete her challenges, which stripped away the sense of immediate danger I was expecting. This next part is more of a personal preference than a flaw in the book, but I would have enjoyed this story much more if it were written in the first person. I found myself craving more inner thoughts and a deeper connection to the protagonist's feelings than the third-person narration provided. I also felt the "spice" should have been avoided altogether. I understand this is a Young Adult book, so I wasn't expecting anything graphic, but the way it was handled felt clunky. It reminded me of being a teenager and having my dad suddenly change the channel whenever a spicy scene came on the TV; the story would suddenly fast-forward and I would be left feeling like I missed a scene because of an awkward cut. I have to give credit where it’s due, though - I did not see the twist at the end coming and it genuinely made me cry! However.....I was surprised by the FMC’s reaction because while she had a slight sense of urgency, she didn't seem nearly as emotional about the revelation as I was. The plot had the potential to be truly amazing, it just needed a bit more room to breathe and more emotional weight to reach its full potential, so I would still recommend for an easy and nice read.
