I'd say that "cat-and-mouse" was an appropriate term to describe this novel. I'm new to this author and I wasn't disappointed, I'll read more. It's exactly what I want from a psychological thriller. Let's start with the length. Jane Doe is about 260 pages and the author doesn't wast them. She jumps right in and lets organically lets the reader in on what happened before page on through Jane's thoughts and plans. The chapters are short, perfect for a novel both of this length and subject. I can't even find fault with the writing. That sounds like I want to, but the way Jane spoke when around Steven and his family was rather juvenile for a 30 year old and it annoyed me. She was playing a part though, acting how he wanted and expected a woman to act so it was intentional and necessary.I would have given this 5 stars if I had stopped reading half way through Chapter 48 and left those last pages unfinished. They really were enough to ruin the ending for me. When an ending is disappointing, well it's the feeling you're left with and it taints the overall experience, no matter how much you may have enjoyed the rest.
