“The mayor’s office lead the way, as a new city was underway, and old traditions were cast away…” Can progress make room for tradition? That’s the question posed to readers in Bargad, an enchanting tale that transcends cultural boundaries. Set in an ancient village in India, Bargad is a compelling tale of love, compassion, and gratitude that teaches children to respect and care for traditions and the environment. Bargad, a banyan tree, is the oldest resident of the small village of Vikasnagar. He serves as a symbol of strength and prosperity to the townspeople and is the center of the traditional Indian celebration of Vat Savitri. One day he finds his existence challenged by the mayor, who wants to tear him down to make room for a new road. Bargad has been able to stand the challenge of time, but will he be able to withstand modernization? Award-winning children’s book author Subhash Kommuru pairs charming rhymes with the whimsical illustrations of Sujata Kommuru to create a lovely story the entire family can share again and again.
