Massachusetts, New York, Virginia, North Carolina, South Carolina, and Georgia, in addition to considerable areas of unoccupied former crown lands and colonial proprietary lands, had claims to unoccupied western lands. The claims of Virginia, Maryland, Connecticut, and Massachusetts overlapped in the territory north west of the Ohio river; the lands of North Carolina, South Carolina and Georgia were farther south.
