查看全部I read so many novels about WWII when I was in high school and college, I actively avoid them now. However, I made an exception for this novel, and I am so glad that I did. I loved this novel. I'm a sucker for epistolary stories, and this novel made wonderful use of the form, creating intimacy with the main characters, building suspense and conveying real emotion. I finished the second half in a single sitting (well into the early morning), and cried through the last 3 or 4 chapters. I truly felt the power of Queenie and Maddie's friendship in the midst of the war's deprivations and struggles.
