描述
A story of seduction and blackmail, it is also a portrait of the trifles and miseries of a society and a social class dominated by the suffocating weight of mediocrity. Cousin Basilio moves us to the scene of a languishing Lisbon, to illuminate, throughout his exciting story, a varied cast of characters in which, among others, the unfortunate Luisa, the scoundrel Basilio or the embittered Juliana stand out, perhaps the strongest in the novel in his tragic resentment.
