Huntress reviewCharacters: Kaede, taisin and this being fantasy we have so many other characters. Kaede is a....princess(?) she is royalty and living at an academy for sages despite not having any gift for it at all she is an extremely unsure 17 year old and she likes girls better then boys. Taisin is a strong sage at 17 and is trying to hide her feelings for kaede. The summery is very misleading for these characters neither one of them are huntresses or anything of that sort. The names were hard to remember and characters would get mixed up or be hard to invasio. The romance between kaede and taisin felt platonic not romantic you feel so disconnected with the characters that you really don't care who dies you just want to know how it ends D-Story: This is a slow paced story the summery does NO justice to this story at all similar to the trailer for “The bridge to terrbitha” it is very misleading. This is a story is very jumbled yes it is about a journey to the fairy kingdom to help get the summer time back, yes two girls fall in love on the way and yes it would be considered a bitter sweet ending. This would be a perfect story for open minded fantasy lovers however the flaws hold this story back from really blooming into something amazing. First flaw is it is written in third person that normally would not be a flaw in itself many successful books have been written in third person, this story goes back and forth between the two girls again not unheard of though a bit more rare in third person then in first. What dragged it down was the unexpected third person's third persons POV now if it was in their own chapter or page it would be fine however this unexpected writing comes anytime in the middle of a chapter or kaede's or taisin's POV making it hard to focus. The other flaw or flaws was that it was too slow and too detailed pages upon pages of the journey describing almost every little thing they did or went or saw half way though you almost forget what the main plot of the story is again. The last thing that really didn't help and this could have been because of the other two reasons is you feel detached from the characters. This is more like reading a story then experiencing it you feel nothing for the characters and when the big stuff finally happens or the “heartbreaking” ending occurs you don't really feel it like you should D-Cover: striking and yet something isn't right. Kaede or taisin on the cover in a emerald or black robe holding a staff (?) with the snow and clouds behind her. This cover is very Disney mulan ish is a lot of ways isn't it? The staff thing is going thought the curvy of the purple fronted H going by first impressions this is an “oh wow” kinda cover but the longer you look at it the longer things feel off or and it bores you there is nothing to keep you from wanting to search this cover like you would with other covers B-Rating: YA (there is a fair amount of blood and killing however as well as kissing)Company: little brown and company (aka little brown books I believe)My rating : 2 of 5 I AM SO GLAD THIS IS OVER! It has been a while ( like march or december)since I've read a book that I've either forced myself to finish and or was really glad it was over like a breath of fresh air and a chance to move on to something better. I should note I was going to stop at page 50 I even made a note “ Pg 50 – I made it to page 50 easily and smoothly although it is going painfully slow and I and hoping the adventure will happen soon I'll keep going 50 pages by 50 pages in hopes that it will get better though slow or not I can't seem to put it down” and that was the problem as much as I disliked it and as much as I couldn't connect with the characters I couldn't put it down. This was a bad book and NOT because of the two girls falling in love. I'll just place some of my notes here from various points in the book (I TYPED this so don't freak I didn't actually mark up the book)pg 28- talk of kaedea MC loving women and wanting to maybe marry other women came up as well as her first kiss no “ewww” reaction however my insides did churn a bit or something like thatAlso having the worst time picturing the differences between these charactersPg 42- Amazingly splendid writing and the story and characters are shaping up real well too I'm enjoying it but hesitant half waiting and half dreading the love aspect of this novel also the “choices and decisions” thing is getting hammer in a little thick and also kinda goes again the whole “being GLBT is not a choice or lifestyle” aspect a bit Also the jumpy third person narrative is annoying (notbetween the two MC's but between a “third person” thing in the middle of the same chapterheres some other tidbits from the rest of the notesnot bad thus far but I feel detached from the characters I don't really feel anything for them its more like I'm reading a story about something to happened to someone then actually experiencing it myselfDefendant a detachment from the characters and by the slow and almost unrelieved scenes it is surprising that this is a YA book seeing as most people who read YA want fast past books to keep them interested I've made it this far the romances are sweet but really weak I think that has to do with not being emotionally invested in the characters as I should be I think if I were more I'd feel more towards these characters then I'd be all “awww” at the romancesSo yeah that was my biggest thing was I felt so detached from it all I mean I didn't even feel disgusted much by the two girls kissing I just thought “why” it really did not feel like a romantic love more of a platonic friend love then lover loveso yes I'm happy it's over on to the next! (sorry love that saying from ghost hunters)
