描述

In a chilling tale that weaves together the threads of digital and real-world horrors, Scott King, an enigmatic online investigative journalist, finds himself drawn into the dark history surrounding Arla Macleod's gruesome death. The case is not cut-and-dried; instead, it serves as a labyrinthine puzzle that reveals the stark realities of social media's grip on society and the hidden horrors lurking beneath the surface of seemingly ordinary lives. As King delves deeper into the mystery, he begins to unearth a disturbing web of connections that hint at something far more sinister than a simple act of violence.

Through Scott's relentless quest for truth, the narrative explores themes of obsession, fame, and the vulnerability of personal narratives in the age of the internet. Each revelation brings him closer to a haunting understanding of the impact of digital lives and the real consequences they can leave behind. As he races against time, readers are left questioning how well they truly know those within their own online circles—the ultimate reflection of a modern-day nightmare.

Wesolowski has done it again. This book has an overall higher score here than its predecessor, Six Stories, and I know it's because fewer people have rated it, but I have to say I disagree. While I've given both books 4 stars, I'd say that Six Stories got the full 4, and Hydra got 3.8. It was almost as good as the first one. In fact, there were parts of Hydra that I liked more than Six Stories, but ultimately, the conclusion wasn't quite as well paced for me. I appreciated the red herring, and when THE TWIST happened I thought, "ohhhhh, of course." It was satisfying and all the dots connected. The "getting there" bit in the last 90 minutes or so of the audio book was what sort of threw me a little. I thought one of the interviews was unnecessary, and as I type this part of my brain is saying, "NO IT WASN'T IT SHOWED ____," but even still, I think that bit could have been done differently. Again, as stated, I listened to the audiobook which, like Six Stories, sports a full cast of narrators. Scott King is voiced by the same person, and you'll recognise another voice actor from the last book as well. On the whole, I'm enjoying this series immensely, and wish it was an actual podcast (not that I'd ever have time to listen, since audiobooks take up all my time). Since it isn't, I can only hope that Wesolowski has many, many, many more of these in store for us.
