查看全部This was a buddy read with one of my best good friends :)This is from a list we created to venture into different genres we haven't read before and ones we haven't read in a long time and see if we can find any hidden gems we didn't know about. We both at one time only read thrillers and its been a long time since either of us has picked up one. I had already had this book on my shelf for a while so we added it to our list.I will say that having not read thrillers or 3rd person POV writing for a while it took me a little bit to get into the writing style, but that is just a personal thing. Now for the story I was immediately interested in where the story was going and I have to say although I guessed where the Bone Collector found his victims I didn't know in what capacity he was there in.What I found interesting is the dynamic of the families of the two missing children. You'd think on the outside that the parents of Clara would be the more stable but there were cracks even before she was taken and they only got wider after she was taken. Now Jakey's parents, while falling apart and grief stricken, managed to hold a more united front than Clara's parents. The kids in this really pill at your heartstrings and make you really feel the emotions they are feeling. You also got to see the emotional unravelling of the detective on the case when she starts to feel responsible for not noticing the pattern between an earlier victim and Clara before Jakey was taken. You feel her guilt in everything she doesI had a feeling it was going to end on a cliffhanger and I cannot wait to read the next one and find out if Clara is ok and that Jakey doesn't get taken again.
This book really is excellent. Fiona Cummins does a great job of building suspense and intrigue without relying on major twists to make the book enjoyable. There are a couple of small 'twists' but they're just lovely little moments that enrich the story, as opposed to taking it in a totally different direction. She's also crafted a near perfect villain - someone you definitely loathe, but who has moments of tenderness and empathy. Despite its dark subject matter, this book is an absolute joy to read.I listened to the audiobook and the narrator is excellent, giving distinct voices to each character. I'm very excited to read the sequel.
