Lame's Leases

Hobart Lame ranches on leased land at Pine Ridge Reservation in South Dakota. Just as he is physically weakened from illness and struggling with depression, his livelihood is jeopardized when an old friend under the influence of a violent and troublesome local family threatens to terminate the leases, leaving Hobart a landless cattleman. While he works on these problems, Hobart thinks about his Indian identity and the way he was raised. Descriptions of his friends and family members contribute to a portrait of life on Pine ridge.
