Greg Trevane is in severe strife. His marriage has broken down and after telling him she loves him, his wife walks out the door of their Lake District home and disappears off the face of the earth. Apart from the worry, his conscience is killing him. His walks over the fells and crags of the district ease his mind to a degree. During one of these walks he has met and befriended a fellow perambulator. His new friend turns out to be no ordinary man. One of his two careers involves assisting the law by the criminal profiling of unknown perpetrators involved in murder investigations. Greg's new friend has reluctantly agred to assist, by helping a task force involved, among other things, in the search for Jean Trevane. Jean Trevane is still alive... He brain is being assaulted by a repeated cocktail of drugs; her mind emptied and readied for new intellect to take residence. She is a surrogate, just like the dozens of dead and decaying failures lying with her in the darkness of an underground mausoleum. But beyond everything else, Jean Trevane is a fighter and a survivor. Greg knows this and he will never give up his search, even when all seems lost. Along the way, he and his wife will encounter their worst fears, strange and dangerous people and something ancient and timeless that was once far beyond the pragmatic outlook of this man and his abducted wife.
