描述
Josiah Royce, born 1855 in a mining town in Grass Valley, California, raised under rough, almost primitive circumstances, rose to become one of the great philosophers of our time. In his _ ideological development he was greatly influenced by Plato, Kant, Fichte, Schopenhauer and Hegel, and, in later years, by the Logic of Charles Peirce and the dynamic psychology of William James.
He was tied to William James in close friendship for many decades, and while James secured Royces appointment as Pro- fessor at Harvard, their views were as frequently contrasting as they were in agreement.
The present Essay on Principles of Logic was originally published in German in the Encyclopedia der philosophischen Wissenschaften edited by Wilhelm Windelband.
Among his other works The Religious Aspect of Philos- ophy, The Spirit of Modern Philosophy, Studies of Good and Evil, The World and the Individual, Outline of Psychology, The Philosophy of Loyalty, William James and Other Essays of the Philosophy of Life, The Sources of Religious Insight, The Prob- lem of Christianity, War and Insurance, The Hope of the Great Community, Lectures on Modern Idealism, Fugitive Essays.
