描述
From rape culture to mansplaining, from French sex scandals to marriage and the nuclear family, from Virginia Woolf to colonialism, these essays are a fierce and incisive exploration of the issues that a patriarchal culture will not necessarily acknowledge as 'issues' at all. With grace and energy, and in the most exquisite and inviting of prose, Rebecca Solnit proves herself a vital leading figure of the feminist movement and a radical, humane thinker.

All of the points that she makes are pointed and well argued and none of them ring untrue, but they come across in a way that makes it sound like her struggle is the ultimate and most important one. Also, this is very high-brow. Definitely not the most accessible written feminist text. Be prepared for some things to go over your head, if you're not used to moving in 'high-class society', like I'm not. The writer comes across very cultured, both positive and negative sides of that.Should this have been written? Definitely. Would somebody else have put it better? I do think so. Maybe a newer, better understandable feminist should take a crack at these subjects, and her ideas towards them. (I mean, what is with Rebecca's constant need to reassure any male readers that she knows there are good men too. Good men don't need you to cater to that. And it ruins the flow of the essay.)Honestly, read this. It will do you good. Then pick up 'I Hate Men,' to balance it out.
