I've been meaning to read this book for forever and it exceeded my expectations
Very disturbed at the use of slurs in this book. They knew it was wrong back then and we know it's worth now.

I read this novel twice so far; the first time at 24, the second at 27. At 24 I fell in love with the beauty of its intoxicating prose, which fills your nostrils with the aroma of an everlasting youth as you follow the progress of its eponymous character down the alleys of a thrilling yet sinful existence. At 27, I read it a little more soberly, made of it part of my master dissertation, and dwelt upon its pages for long hours of study and analysis. At 29, I am still in love with the book. It tells the story of a young man who indulged himself in every conceivable vice without suffering his physical appearance to be tarnished by either age or sins. This very idea contrasts the Victorian moral training which suggested the notion that one's sins were to be carried like an emblem over one's countenance. Dorian had become an exception to the rule when he revolted against the natural order of things and preferred death to the disgrace of aging. His wish for an everlasting youth was granted but none could tell if that was a miracle or a curse. Dorian alone was to chose his own path and create his own destiny. The novel was written under the influence of the French Decadent movement, and was accordingly regarded as impure, effeminate, and perverted. It is an example of the fin-de-siècle fiction which explored the darkest recesses of the Victorian society including obscure themes like duality, hypocrisy, and pleasure-seeking at the expense of ethics. Very captivating, the ending was so sudden. I enjoyed the perspectives that were discussed, making me reflect on these views of women and beauty in modern society.

Regardless, "The Picture of Dorian Gray" remains a significant work in literature, and I can appreciate the effort and artistry that went into its creation.
I honestly have no words... and no reason to not give this book 5 stars. Everything happened so perfectly, so exquisitely. Dorian let his mundane habits destroy his innocence and ended up being destroyed by his darkest secrets. Did he went mad or was the picture really alive? I had only heard fantastic things about this book and it didn't disappoint. To learn that Oscar Wilde was so good with words, making you part of the story, like another character, feeling what Dorian felt... What a majestic story, and what a wonderful character the picture of Dorian Gray made - because yes, the picture was just another characters, even with more protagonism than Dorian himself. Totally recommend.
Oscar wilde is a genius and this was a fucking masterpiece of a book
