In Montana, a few miles south of the Canadian frontier, lay Sixgun, a gun-hung town in which Hal Rucker, rustler and killer, was the law -- which meant that the law itself was owl-hoot. Into this turbulent outcasts' paradise rode Sundown, a cowboy with a single name and a single purpose: to side justice whether or not it toted a badge. He rode in from the Montana Trail looking for trouble. Halfway down the main street he met the Rucker brothers. When the dust had cleared, Pole Rucker was dead and Hal Rucker whipped.

The gun-proddy Diamond B immediately hired the stranger for seventy-five a month plus shells, to back their play in the range war. Then they told him the marshal's name - RUCKER!
