描述

"Football?!"-

By which simple, concise interrogative device, the Public begs to know what the devil is going on and what is meant by it; by which earnest and heartfelt cry, it demands reasons-and good ones-which will explain the author’s audacious efforts to thrust another football book under its nose and into its hands.

The modern bookshelf, the Public feels, is a structure that has already given much, and given freely to football-is a structure already overburdened, through overindulgence, by the cares and concerns of the Beautiful Game.

And the modern mind, the Public holds, is already a mind much put-upon by volumes full of statistics, and dewy-eyed tomes that ask, “Remember when?".

What claim then, does STUDS-UP make for the Public's further attention? Why should the Public open, once more, its heart and its wallet to matters football?

To this, we might reply that STUDS-UP would provide the reader with a new and novel experience; that it would, if given the chance, acquaint the reader with the jovial and eccentric side of the Laws the Game-that side which is generally unknown and unseen by the Public; that aspect of the Game’s character which, though often suppressed, hears the Crowd call-out, "You don't know what you're doing!” and yearns to respond, "Yes, but no one really does, you know!"

But we won't bother-such an effort would feel labored; full of superfluous detail. Instead, we rely upon that simple commercial model that Barnum established; that Brighton made famous; and that made Newcastle a place worth seeing after dark-which is to say, we shall do no more than cry-out, “Behold-for there is barmy business a-foot!”; and then we shall sit back and await favorable developments-trusting that the Public will always be a Public that appreciates and rewards curiosities.

Enjoy!
