A heart-wrenching tale unfolds in a family grappling with devastating illness, loyalty, and moral dilemmas. The story revolves around Anna, a young girl who has spent her life as a genetic designer. Born specifically to be a donor for her older sister, Kate, who suffers from leukemia, Anna finds herself torn between her love for her sister and her desire for autonomy. This internal struggle sets the stage for a gripping narrative that explores the complexities of familial bonds and the question of how far one will go for love.

As Anna becomes increasingly aware of her role in the family's dynamics, she contemplates taking legal action to gain control over her own body. Her decision ignites fiery debates on ethics and medical choices, forcing each family member to confront their own feelings of desperation, guilt, and hope. Through alternating perspectives, readers gain intimate glimpses into the emotional turmoil that grips a family under extraordinary circumstances.

Picoult's storytelling masterfully blends heartbreak with moments of resilience, delving deep into the characters' psyches and the moral intricacies of their choices. The narrative challenges readers to ponder what it truly means to be a keeper, both of secrets and of one another. As the story reaches its climax, the consequences of love, sacrifice, and self-determination resonate long after the final page is turned.

Beautiful, moving story told by a talented author. I loved that each character was able to tell his or her side of the story, alternating between them for each chapted (and each had their own font).
