But alongside her fight for survival comes another challenge—navigating the charged and complicated relationships she forms within the castle walls. From her dangerously magnetic instructor Stark, to the enigmatic crown prince Killian, every interaction feels laced with tension, temptation, and the possibility of betrayal. It’s this simmering push-and-pull that makes the story so addictive, leaving you constantly wondering where Meryn’s heart—and trust—will ultimately fall. The world is rich and brutal, the direwolf bond adds a fascinating depth, but it’s the romantic tension that makes this book stand out. It’s the kind of story where love can be just as dangerous as the trials themselves.Dark, romantic, and impossible to put down—I’m already eager to see how everything unfolds in book two.
4.5 ⭐It was a bit slower to my liking, but the last 10% was worth the wait.
This book is basically Fourth Wing meets werewolves. Sure, the characters don't actually turn into werewolves, but this is the best way to describe it. The pace was a little slow for my liking, but there is loads of detail about descriptions and settings and everything that is going on. And, honestly, I went into this book with little expectations and was thoroughly impressed with what the author did. I anticipated that I wasn't going to like this book, but was so glad that I did like it because the binding of the book and the end papers is beautiful and, honestly, the story is quit interesting. Instead of being introduced to the main love interest straight away, we get an insight that I've not seen done in other books before where the love interest, Lee/Killian, is actually the enemy without knowing this. At first, I really did think Lee was the child kidnapper but this theory is overshadowed by the revelation of Lee actually being Prince Killian. I feel like this was genius because it is so easy to use this revelation as a distraction-and the fact that the author actually managed to make me believe Killian was on the MC's side is AMAZING. But, to be honest, I don't really like Killian. I feel like despite having him in the book, his persona doesn't really fit his character in intimate moments with the MC.There was points when I got a little bored and was wondering when something interesting was going to happen; and every time, the author brought in a little more mystery about what the MC was seeing in terms of the shadows. And, to be completely honest, the ending was a complete and utter shock to me. I would definitely love to see what the author does in the next book!
