Audio book was fantastic. Do not recommend listening out loud for people to hear. Slight smutt advisory (miniscule and skip able)
This book had no business being almost 500 pages and still making me feel like I could read another 500 without blinking. That never happens for me. And the craziest part? I don’t even fully like these characters—and yet I’m completely obsessed with them.
They’re messy. Morally questionable. Half of them are manipulative, emotionally constipated, or just straight-up confusing. And somehow that’s exactly what makes them so compelling. The dynamics are so toxic, so co-dependent, so “are you okay??” that you can’t look away. Everyone is lowkey obsessed with each other in one way or another and I ate that up, no shame.
Libby and Nico? Yeah, that’s my agenda. Academic rivals with underlying care and tension? Say less. The “I know exactly what shape she takes up in the universe” line?? I needed to lie down. Meanwhile Parisa and Callum are walking red flags but in a “I need to study you under a microscope” way. Tristan is just there trying to survive the insanity, and Reina… I’m not even gonna lie, she faded into the background for me a bit.
Now let’s be real—the pacing is rough. This book drags for a long time before anything really kicks in. And the writing? Beautiful, but also confusing as hell at times. I had to reread more than a few passages because I genuinely had no idea what was going on. The flashbacks and vague descriptions didn’t help either.
BUT. Once it picks up? It picks up. The last part of the book actually had me locked in, and the setup for what’s coming next is insane. The whole elitism vs accessibility angle, the moral ambiguity, the way none of these people are actually “good”—it’s all so interesting.
End of the day: this book is messy, slow, confusing, and a little pretentious… but also addictive, smart, and weirdly fun. I didn’t fully understand it, but I felt it—and honestly, that was enough.
