look away if you like this book 🧍🏼♀️I WANTED TO LOVE THIS. you have no idea how badly i wanted this to be a five star and leave a lasting impact on me. but i ended up being bored and struggling for over half of the book, just constantly hoping it would get better.i was never attached to any of the characters, so none of those last 150 or so pages had any big effect on me. there wasn’t the emotional devastation i was looking forward to. i never bought into the magic system. i didn’t like the writing, like rf kuang was acting like the reader has no concept of ‘racism is bad’ and seemed to have to lay it all out like we’re five years old. there were definitely some notable lines but overall the writing just didn’t mesh with me.i’m glad i finally finished this after starting it literally at the beginning of february (i put it down around halfway and didn’t plan on picking it back up sigh), but i definitely could’ve gone without it & am not feeling like i’ll pick up rf kuang .... ever again?
Maestoso, é la prima parola che mi viene in mente per descrivere la portata di questo romanzo. Babel è sicuramente la lettura più bella, profonda, toccante, ambiziosa e colta di quest’anno. All’interno troviamo temi spaventosamente attuali come: razzismo, discriminazione di genere, colonialismo, ricerca di d’identità, schiavismo, rivoluzione, appropriazione culturale e rapporto tra linguaggio e dominio…Sicuramente non una lettura semplice o leggera, ma necessaria soprattutto visti i tempi in cui viviamo.
