So. Thoughts. Firstly, I must say I LOVED the audiobook. I'm by no means a French speaker, but the audiobook narration was such a fun experience for me (although I can see how it can be a hit or miss). It's very hard for me to enjoy a book that has absolutely no likeable characters, but this one was very captivating. There was something that felt different from other stories of its kind and I really appreciated that.
⭐️3-3.5Am I in love with this book? Not necessarily, there are some misses in this book. Two of them being the book's ending and endless twists. It is clear that Lucy Foley is able to build anticipation and suspense, keeping the reader engaged and enthralled, but as the book progresses, you begin to suspect the big reveal and the ending will not live up to the great build-up, and eventually pale in comparison with it. This is something I've noticed with other books by her, such as The Guest List and The Hunting Party. I felt as if the twists at the end as well as the overall conclusion fell flat, because they weren't necessarily world-changing, discreet or shocking. Some might say that they saw all of the so-called twists coming from a mile away. Only the reveal of Ben's whereabouts and who harmed him the night Jess moved in caught me off guard.The characters in the story, especially Jess, were another downside. While I appreciate the use of unlikeable characters with their glaring flaws in mysteries and thrillers, Jess slightly irritated me with her reckless or clumsy ways of investigating her brother's sudden disappearance at times. Where is the tact and discretion? While Mimi and Antoine were pretty pathetic, I found reading about them and getting to know them quite fascinating.Overall, was I highly entertained and interested? Yes. Would I consider this book to be better than The Guest List by Lucy Foley? Definitely. Is this the most fun I've ever had reading a Lucy Foley novel? Absolutely. Did I enjoy the audiobook and thought the narrators did a wonderful job? Certainly. Would I recommend this book or pick up another book from Lucy Foley? Undecided.
