Descrizione
In her inimitable style, Gertrude Stein provides a window into the workings of one of the most celebrated artists of the 20th century.
By joining the dots in the evolution of Picasso’s work, his influences and the tumultuous events of the early century, Gertrude Stein arrives at an intimate understanding of Picasso’s genius.
Gertrude Stein was a cultural gate-keeper for so many artists and writers flocking to Paris in the early 20th century. If anyone could answer these questions of imaginative genius, it was surely her.
‘One of the significant women in the life of Pablo Picasso was Gertrude Stein, who loomed large as collector, muse and phenomenon.’ New York Times
Gertrude Stein (1874-1946) was born in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. She moved to Paris in 1903 where her writing, patronage and soirees encouraged the avant-garde movements of the pre-war and inter-war years. She helped the careers of writers like Ernest Hemingway, F. Scott Fitzgerald, and Sherwood Anderson, and painters Henri Matisse, Juan Gris and Pablo Picasso, who even painted her portrait.
