Gertrude Stein (1874-1946) was born in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. She moved to Paris in 1903 where her writing, patronage and soirees encouraged the avant-garde movements of the pre-war and inter-war years. She helped the careers of writers like Ernest Hemingway, F. Scott Fitzgerald, and Sherwood Anderson, and painters Henri Matisse, Juan Gris and Pablo Picasso, who even painted her portrait.
