説明

In a seemingly idyllic village, an unsettling crime shakes the community to its core as two young girls vanish without a trace from their primary school. The local atmosphere, once filled with laughter and innocence, is suddenly overshadowed by fear and suspicion. D.S. Butler masterfully crafts a tale of mystery, where the picturesque setting conceals dark secrets and haunting truths.

As the investigation unfolds, the tension heightens, revealing the complexities of village life and the interconnectedness of its residents. With mounting pressure to solve the case, the local authorities grapple with their own biases and limitations while the community's unity begins to fray. Suspicion and paranoia seep into the hearts of the townsfolk as hidden agendas come to light, painting a portrait of a place that may not be as perfect as it first appeared.

Butler's narrative delves into the emotional turmoil experienced by the families of the missing girls, capturing the essence of their desperate search for answers. The story unfolds with a thrilling intensity, keeping readers on the edge of their seats, as they too become embroiled in a complex web of deceit, urging the truth to finally emerge.

An interesting read that I liked somewhat more than the previous mystery I read. While the case at some points could be gripping, I found DS Hart's repetition and hyper-focus on certain suspects to be tiresome. As others have mentioned, the book focused on the process of gathering clues, interviewing families etc., which I did like. Although, in the end, she was right about the girls' being on the Palmer property, again, I found her fixation on it being Jasper or his father's doing to be annoying, and it was quite obvious to me that it wasn't. However, Cathy's involvement did surprise me. I liked the brief insight into some of the other detectives' home lives, and overall it wasn't a bad book. DS Hart just didn't connect with me. However, I do think she could grow on me, so I might give the next book a try. I'd like to thank Netgalley and the publisher for giving me an advanced copy. Unfortunately, it took a while for me to get into the book and then school got in the way.
