Ver TodosStill Born, Guadalupe Nettel's fourth novel, treats one of the most consequential decisions of early adulthood – whether or not to have children – with the intelligence and originality that have won her international acclaim. Alina and Laura are independent and career-driven women in their mid-thirties, neither of whom have built their future around the prospect of a family. Laura has taken the drastic decision to be sterilized, but as time goes by Alina becomes drawn to the idea of becoming a mother. When Alina’s daughter survives childbirth – after a diagnosis that predicted the opposite – and Laura becomes attached to her neighbour’s son, both women are forced to reckon with the complexity of their emotions.
Much different from the books I normally read, but I really enjoyed this one. Read like a research paper on motherhood, friendship, and the importance of community. Lots of interesting concepts that make you ponder the gray areas of life.
It’s a good book, but I’m not into the writing style. Alhasil, ceritanya sendiri jadi berasa dilempar bolak-balik. Sedih iya, paham juga sama perasaan mereka. Aku sendiri suka karena kedua tokoh perempuan di sini, meski punya pilihan hidup berbeda, tapi masih take care for each other. Sadly, I can’t put myself in their shoes. It’s important for us to know, banyak adegan yang sebenarnya makin meyakinkan aku agar berpikir matang tentang keputusan hamil dan punya anak. The fact is, our choice, whether to be a mother or not, will change our lives forever. So that’s my honest review :)
