Description

Alina and Laura are two fierce, ambitious women navigating life in their thirties, each carving out their own path in the concrete jungle. Despite their success, they find themselves wrestling with the ticking biological clock and the societal pressures that come with it. As they juggle demanding careers and personal aspirations, the conversation around motherhood becomes unavoidable, sparking a deep exploration of their desires and fears.

Their journey unfolds against the backdrop of friendship, identity, and the concept of family, leading them to confront what it really means to create a life—together or apart. With a blend of humor and poignancy, the story reflects on the choices women make in the pursuit of happiness while challenging traditional notions of fulfillment and success.

Still Born, Guadalupe Nettel's fourth novel, treats one of the most consequential decisions of early adulthood – whether or not to have children – with the intelligence and originality that have won her international acclaim. Alina and Laura are independent and career-driven women in their mid-thirties, neither of whom have built their future around the prospect of a family. Laura has taken the drastic decision to be sterilized, but as time goes by Alina becomes drawn to the idea of becoming a mother. When Alina’s daughter survives childbirth – after a diagnosis that predicted the opposite – and Laura becomes attached to her neighbour’s son, both women are forced to reckon with the complexity of their emotions.

Much different from the books I normally read, but I really enjoyed this one. Read like a research paper on motherhood, friendship, and the importance of community. Lots of interesting concepts that make you ponder the gray areas of life.
