I was excited to see a new Peter Swanson book and the synopsis sounded intriguing, but I was left mostly disappointed with this one. I’m usually a big fan of different writing formats and liked the idea of telling the story in reverse… but it didn’t really work well here. Because the main crime happens pretty immediately into the story, the rest of the book exists solely to play out what we’ve already been told on the first 50 pages. While it was fun to find some of the references, it mostly just made it feel super repetitive and slow. I did not connect with or care for either of the characters. Neither of them was really likable and their whole relationship was very strange. Overall, I was a bit bored with this one, but I did like the very end (like literally the last paragraph) and how it tied in back to the present.
