3.5 starsWhat a brilliant book! I loved the premise of two rivals traveling through time and space to thwart and tease each other at every opportunity and how they spin the past to always block one another and eventually save each other. Some of the best yearning I've ever read, left me wanting more of how they end up together. I'm glad this Romeo and Juliet story was not a tragedy. I loved how they so intentionally manipulated the smallest of details to communicate with each other - growing rings in a tree over years to send a letter, etc. I think if I read it faster I probably would've rated this higher but I made it hard for myself to connect to the characters. Great first sci-fi book though!!
A story of love and hate, order and chaos, RED AND BLUE. They find one another in time and space, dimensions and lives apart, yet their love and letters carry through the wind and stars. Beginnings and ending loop together and break the world into purple.
This book completely blew me away. It is short but incredibly powerful. It's poetry disguised as science fiction. The writing is lyrical and strange in the best way. It makes you stop and reread lines just because they’re so gorgeous. Even though the worldbuilding is wild and hard to follow in the beginning it's so worth it. It’s the kind of book that stays with you long after you finish it. I would commit a number of atrocities to read this book again for the 1st time.
Genre: Sci-Fi Romance Novella 🌌🩷📌Tropes/Themes: Sapphic; Time Travel; Assassins; Forbidden Love; Love Letters⚠️CW: war, death, mentions of human sacrifice🌶️: 💖 (squeaky clean)Medium: audiobook 🎧 💭Thoughts:My soul was ripped from me last year when I listened, and it’s ripped from me anew this year 😭 this story is so unique, and beautiful, and poetic - I’ll never have enough words to describe its impact
This book is yearny in the way that In The Mood For Love is. And the use of color reminded me of it too. Kinda upset that the time travel war was the backdrop here and not more of a focal point. A lor bit too flowery for me. But I can see why this has been loved by so many
A beautifully written sapphic tale. Carved through time, with countless little Easter eggs to our own human past. A times this felt like a dance between Picard and the Borg, a bit of a romantic way of looking at what it means to both belong and be stubbornly your own. It’s just long enough to be satisfying and just short enough to want more. And the little twist at the end felt just right.
