For One More Day by Mitch Albom, a book that makes you rethink your relationships, and forces you to reassess how you spend your time. Chick Benetto has set out to kill himself. He'd give anything for one more day, one more moment with his mother who has passed. His life has been a bundle of rights and wrongs; in his darkest hour, loneliness, alcohol, and longing mingle together, pushing him over the edge. Despite this, 'You can find something truly important in a minute.' and sometimes that thing of importance gifts you the motivation to keep going. This book, holds so much emotion. You are put into the shoes of a man who wants to kill himself and in his attempts he experiences moments with his deceased mother that he never could have dreamed possible.In some ways the concept of this book reminded me of A Christmas Carol by Charles Dickens. Chick Benetto is very much a changed man by the end of his tale, and to get to that point he had endured a visit from the ghost of his mother, and recollections of his childhood. There is no doubt that readers will feel the need to reassess their own lives, sitting face to face with their childhoods and versions of themselves that have come to pass. The tale itself compels you to do so, I think it is our empathetic human nature that reacts to this book, making us consider parents as people, anger as misunderstanding, and loss as unconditional love.Albom has written this book with a flowing conversation-like dialogue that makes you feel as though Chick is sat on Bleachers of The Little League Field with you telling his story. This book is for readers prepared to feel something. Readers prepared to grieve on behalf of Benetto and perhaps for themselves, as they see glimpses of their own lives between the lines of this story.
