The first story is the longest. A boy named John runs away to live a life aboard a train as a drifter. He quickly meets an older woman who seems to have it all figured out. John follows her every move as she tries to finesse her way into ownership of the entire train. The book is written in a third-person manner, with access to John's thoughts and feelings, allowing the reader to put themselves in his shoes while contemplating the lessons he learns from a fly-on-the-wall perspective.

The following short stories are a series of thought-provoking, sometimes absurd situations designed to leave the reader in any certain emotional state, ranging from hopeful, to desperate. They are specifically crafted as to not give an entire story, but rather allow the reader to fill in his or her own notions based on context.
