Description
The creatures of the 'Five Oceans and the Twelve Seas' evolve intelligence caused by chemical imbalances in the ocean’s biochemistry which in turn was caused by the pollution of the oceans by mankind. The same way that intelligence evolved in mankind when his ancestors left the oceans to live on the world's land masses in the prehistoric past.
With intelligence the sea creatures organise themselves and declare war on the land creatures in the hope of rectifying the situation. They are led by a Dublin Bay Prawn, Mr. O'Shun. The sharks run the military, led by Chalky a great white shark, they in turn are assisted by an octopus, the Professor. Together they are able to convert World War ordnance from World War sunken wrecks together with other ingenious inventions to conduct the war.
The war begins with attacks on land creatures swimming off beaches, attacks on pleasure boats and fishing fleets. Followed by the attacking and sinking of ships in the major ports of the world using limpet mines, again salvaged from sunken wrecks
As the war progresses, attacks are made on major shipping routes, mainly the Pacific, in addition ships are sunk the Panama Canal to close the Canal. The last major phase of operations is the attempted blowing up of four of South Africa's major dams.
Minor scuffles are scattered throughout the book these include an attack on the Eiffel tower by a female Pacific Chinook Salmon called Chinoo assisted by an octopus called Mr. Choo, a seagull called Bounty, and two young mudfish called Ho and Po. Attacks on the Florida Keys island 'joining road' which includes a battle between Chalky and fisherman. There is also an attack on a Scottish sea field of electric turbines and a human attack on the sea creature’s headquarters which is based on the sunken German Battle Cruiser ‘The Bismarck’
There are interesting political glimpses of the world's leading countries housed in the United Nations Building in New York and an annex of that building into which a pool was built to house Chalky and the Professor who represented the sea creatures at that meeting. During the meeting, the land creatures try to come to terms with the war and its causes. One is left with the thought of what could have been averted and what could have been changed.
Woven into the story is a tender love relationship between a Zambesi shark called Zambi and a Pacific Chinook Salmon called Chinoo. There are also some interesting interactions between Paddy, the sharks, and the octopuses.
The land creatures are represented by the President of the United States of America, President Savannah, and his staff. Mr. Grey, the British Prime Minister. Also, Inspector O' Grady who is the inspecting officer in the Florida Keys incident who follows his suspects to Africa only to be thwarted at the last moment. These sea and land creatures are supported throughout the story by a host of smaller characters who are introduced from time to time.
The idea behind the book is to draw attention to the plight of the oceans caused by pollution and overfishing and it is hoped that the story will appeal to all age groups. A 'must read' for every on of the poluters on this planet called Earth!
