View All3.5/5 stars overall. “To control languages, to control words, is to control what people know.”This book was actually really enjoyable. After contemplating it so long, I decided to buy it and give it a go since the author is coming to London YALC next year which I’m attending and am glad I did because this ended up actually being not only different, which I have been looking for. But easy and simple and something I didn’t know I needed. It disk t feel slow or boring or where you’re questioning what the hell was going on. It had a mystery about understanding a language and though it wasn’t mind boggling, it was still good. Though, the MC was annoying at times where she actually believed doing the wrong thing was the right thing if it meant going back to ‘normal.’ Hate that someone I like dies in the end though.
This was a beautifully written book about the beauty of language, family, and the bonds between both, while also being a heartbreaking look at inequality and oppression. It’s not hard to see the real-world similarities. The world-building was great and I liked the unique take on dragons as citizens vs. animals. It did get a little slow and drawn out in the middle and there’s a small romance subplot that I wish was better developed. The FMC wore me out most of the book with her narrow-mindedness and selfishness, but I think that was also kind of the point. I think she’ll be much easier to like moving forward. I’ll definitely continue the series! “Peace isn’t peace if it’s only given to some.”“… inequality is so deeply entrenched in the foundations of our society that it’s going to need to be dug out, rock by prejudiced rock.”
Absolutely astonishing. I have no words. Definitely helping me keep out of my reading slump
