Description

It began when Walter Brinkley, emeritus professor of English, gave a cocktail party for the newly-wed Craigs. The amiable little man had no intentions of mixing the ingredients for mayhem or of entertaining a murdered. But his party was the start of a nightmare in which a killer with a shotgun blasted the rural peace of Westchester County.

Victim Number One was Caroline Wilkins, ex-Navy "brat" and now the beautiful wife of a naval officer. she was shot while sun-bathing in a secluded place where just a few days earlier, her equally beautiful cousin had been denounced by an addled old man who was violently opposed to nudity.

Captain Heimrich, called in on the case, rounded up some interesting facts about the dead woman's past--facts which linked her with one of the big scandal magazines. Before he could fit all the pieces together, Murder Number Two occurred and the captain himself was almost a witness.

Luckily Walter Brinkley had a good memory, even after banging his head on a sundial, and with his help Captain Heimrich puts the right accent on an exciting and complicated case--and handcuffs on the murderer.
