Most of what happens in the Trespasser takes place inside the characters' respective minds. As far as the plot itself is concerned, there is nothing much going on. In fact there is hardly anything beside an illicit affair between the two main characters. But all the while, Lawrence paints the human mind in a rich palette of complex notions and emotions that really fill the gap, and give the work its true value. It is somewhat painful yet interesting in the manner in which it depicts the alienation of human beings; that inherent estrangement which looms over our heads even with the people we love the most. After all, love does not necessarily mean the capacity to see and read through the mind of another.
