I believe Dostoevsky is beginning to become one of my favourite authors
the first book I've read of Fyodor Dostoevsky, it is beautiful, but for me this is more about loneliness than a love story really. You really are alone when even the slightest care, or attention someone gives you, can be your downfall, because you begin to miss them, you can't stop thinking about them, you made your whole future about them when in reality you were just so alone for so long that you'd settle for so very little, been there and done that, everyone will, and it is a lesson we all need
Just finished "White Nights" by Dostoevsky, and man, what a ride! First off, word of advice: don't read the synopsis if you can help it. My copy had spoilers in it, which kinda sucked. This book hit me right in the feels. I totally connected with the main character – his emotions were so relatable, maybe not as intense as his, but close enough that I almost teared up a few times. It's a quick read, only about 60-70 pages, so you can knock it out in one sitting if you're feeling it.Dostoevsky's writing is something else. The way he captures emotions is just... wow. You literally feel what the characters are going through. The psychological stuff in this book is insane, in a good way. That said, I gave it 3 out of 5 stars. Don't get me wrong, it's good, but I wanted more. The relationship between the characters felt a bit rushed, and I wish it was longer so we could see things develop more. I know it's a novella, so I can't complain too much, but still – I was left wanting more from the characters and their connections.Overall, it's a solid, heart-wrenching read that'll make you feel things. Just be prepared for it to end before you're ready to let go.
What shattered my heart and soul was how we transitioned from a fleeting moment of happiness back into solitude, now painted with even duller colours. Oh, how my heart breaks for the dreamer, whose only fault was to give his heart so freely, always wearing it on his sleeve. Yet, we cannot blame him, can we? Because, I can not. Not when he is so young and naïve, like any of us. But what has that made him? Look, how it shaped his days!Oh, how foolish of you, Nastenska, such a beautiful name for a girl who holds in her hands the heart of such a selfless man. Why only those loving and kind and selfless people that get hurt the most? How dare you break the heart of a man who truly loved you? In one moment, you were making plans, and the next... Oh, Nastenska, how I had envisioned a better life for the two of you, just as I once wished for a better life for the person I thought I loved.Oh, how his heart, his life, mirrors mine so closely, it pains me. Oh, how I bleed now more than ever. The wounds I once believed had healed are now wide open, exposed to the eyes of strangers.
