Description

Agent Pendergast returns in another suspense thriller from New York Times bestselling authors Douglas Preston and Lincoln Child.

Art critic Jeremy Grove is found dead, his face frozen in a mask of terror. He is discovered in a room barricaded from the inside, his body temperature is grotesquely high, the smell of brimstone is everywhere, and the unmistakable imprint of a claw is burned into the wall. As more bodies are discovered, their only connection the bizarre but identical manner of death, the world begins to wonder if the devil has, in fact, come to collect his due.

Teaming with police officer Vincent D'Agosta, Agent Pendergast is determined to solve a case that appears to defy everything, except supernatural logic. Their investigation takes them from the luxury estates of Long Island to the crumbling, legend-shrouded castles of the Italian countryside, where Pendergast faces the most treacherous and dangerous adversary of his career.

The villain in this has caused Umbridge-levels of rage in me. It is remarkably impressive. I was shouting at them during the audiobook. My dog was concerned. This feels like (and judging from the fact that it's listed as two separate series here on Goodreads, probably is) the start of an arc in the series. I'm going to have to see if the library has the next one, because I really need to know what happens next. This starts out feeling like the previous books with a monster-of-the-week vibe, but expands into something a bit bigger. I've been enjoying them so far, but this is starting to feel more like a long-running story and I love the point where a series turns into that. I'm getting remarkably fond of Pendergast, too. At first I was pleased he seemed able to see things clearly and get mysteries solved, but in the last few books I've been rather devoted to him and his mysteries and his uncanny knowledge of things.
