View AllI read this book nine times. Nine!I really loved it. Louis Sachar was/is one of my favorite authors. One of the things that I loved about it so much was how all of the characters connected with one another.
3.5This book was actually freaking bonkers. I don't know how else to explain it.Between the child abuse and the bullying by his fellow "slaves" I really don't know how to make a proper comment. All I know is that I liked Zero from their first interactions, and that I hated everyone else. But from being creepy to understanding his curiosity and then seeing his kindness, Zero really did stand out a lot between everyone. The glimpses in the past were a delight and their little detour at the end. This whole book was just a great read. Unsettling, for sure, but that was the point. And in my opinion there couldn't have been a better ending, I can't even imagine how you could end this story a different way without detracting from its meaning. I cannot explain it right now, but in a future reread I will try to put my thoughts down better. Because this is surely a reread.
